I've just signed a contract with Wendy Pye Publishing in New Zealand for two new first grade readers concerning the instruments of the orchestra and horses' hooves.
Schoolwide Press has just released a new on-line literacy series called "ZING" that will include 2 of my writing projects. Please check out this wonderful new teaching aid at resources.schoolwide.com. [Requires registration.]
The series includes "The Border"
This short story is set in a little German town called Modlareuth in 1956.
It concerns two boys who are best friends and live on opposite sides of a creek that runs through the village. They are completely separated when the Iron Curtain goes up over night. I visited this town in 1996 with some friends who lived on the Russian-controlled side of this wall for many years.
Also there is a nonfiction piece called "Nellie Bly: A Girl With Guts."
Nellie Bly was the pen name Elizabeth Cochran, stunt reporter for several newspapers back in the 1890s. In those days no one would hire a woman to report serious news, so she earned her spot by going undercover in many dangerous places. She also caused a national sensation by going around the world in only 72 days shortly after the book "Around the World in 80 Days" came out.
